What is Thymulin?

Thymulin is a nonapeptide produced by epithelial cells of the thymus and requires zinc binding for its biological activity, which is why zinc status has repeatedly come up as a variable in thymulin research. It was originally characterized as Facteur Thymique Serique, or serum thymic factor, before being more fully structurally defined.

How it is understood to work

Only the zinc-bound form of thymulin is active, and in that form it is thought to act on developing T-lymphocytes in the thymus to support their maturation and differentiation into functional immune cells. Its activity is also linked to broader immune regulation and to modulation of certain inflammatory responses in study models.

Research status

Thymulin is studied in models of immune senescence, since circulating thymulin activity is known to decline with age alongside thymic involution, as well as in models of immune deficiency and autoimmune conditions. This research spans several decades of endocrine-immunology literature but has not produced an approved thymulin-based drug.
