Crypto 101 for Gray Market Purchases
Overview: Stablecoins vs Regular Crypto Coins
Before diving in, it’s helpful to understand the difference between crypto coin types like Bitcoin or Solana, and stablecoins:
| Bitcoin (BTC), Solana (SOL), etc. | Stablecoins (USDT, USDC, PYUSD, etc.) |
|---|---|
| Volatile asset – price fluctuates rapidly | Tied to USD – 1 coin ≈ $1 USD |
| Designed for long-term holding (“digital gold”) | Meant for payments and transfers |
| Widely accepted, but not ideal for stable-value purchases | Preferred for predictable value |
For research peptide purchases, stablecoins are preferred because they hold their value and settle quickly. You’re not gambling on crypto value — just using it as a payment method.
⚠️ Why Network Matters (Solana vs Tron vs Ethereum)
Tether (USDT) and USD Coin (USDC) are not networks, they are stablecoins.
Stablecoins are issued on many different networks — each with their own wallet compatibility.
For example, USDT exists on networks:
- Solana as
USDT/SOL - Ethereum as
USDT/ETHorUSDT/ERC20 - Tron as
USDT/TRXorUSDT/TRC20 - and others too
and USDC exists on networks:
- Solana as
USDC/SOL - Ethereum as
USDC/ETHorUSDC/ERC20 - and others
If you send your crypto payment to the wrong network, you will lose it.
Examples:
- Sending USDT/TRC20 (Tron) to a Solana wallet = 💸 funds gone
- Sending USDT/SPL (Solana) to an Ethereum address = 💸 also gone
Always confirm with the vendor:
- The correct currency (e.g. USDT, UDSC, SOL, PYUSD, etc.)
- The correct network (e.g. “USDT on Tron” means TRC20/TRX, not Solana/SOL/SPL or Ethereum/ETH)
- The correct wallet address for THAT SPECIFIC NETWORK
Also double-check that your wallet (like Trust Wallet) supports that coin on that network.
Before You Start
- 📱 Pick your wallet. This guide uses Trust Wallet, available on mobile and desktop – trustwallet.com (because it’s a self-hosted wallet that doesn’t risk being shutdown like a custodial wallet with Coinbase).
- ✅ Pick your payment coin: Most vendors accept USDT or USDC (on Sol, Tron, or Ethereum), PYUSD (on Sol), or SOL itself.
- 🪙 Trust Wallet features “gasless” transfers and swaps for USDT, USDC and PYUSD on SOL and ETH. (The fees for swapping or transferring will be automatically taken out without you needing to buy extra SOL or ETH.) If you need to use the Tron network, you will need to buy around $10 extra Tron to serve as “gas money” for the fee for the transaction.
- 📅 Buy early: Your first crypto buy may trigger security holds. Plan ahead — ideally 7+ days before your order.
- 💸 Transfer modestly: Try funding your wallet in $100–200 chunks. Some users get flagged for larger transfers.
- 👥 Always verify with your vendor exactly what crypto they accept and the exact wallet address AND network to send to. Crypto is non-refundable if you mess it up and send to the wrong wallet.
- 🗺️ If you are in WA, NY, or another state that limits crypto purchases, you may need to use a VPN while using Trust Wallet for Swaps.
Step-by-Step: Buying SOL & Swapping Stablecoin Using Trust Wallet
🔧 Step 1: Install & Set Up Trust Wallet
- Download Trust Wallet from trustwallet.com or your app store.
- Create new wallet. Create a numerical passcode and enable biometrics.
- Once your wallet is setup, from the home screen, tap Settings ⚙️. Select wallet, tap three dots, choose Manual Backup.
- Write down your 12-word recovery phrase — and store it securely offline. Do NOT skip this.
💳 Step 2: Fund the Wallet by Buying SOL
- From the main screen, tap on Fund.
- Select All Payment Methods and you will have the option to use Apple Pay, a debit card, PayPal, Venmo or Revolut Pay. (You can also select Exchange, and then choose Coinbase or Binance to fund the wallet from an exchange if you have set up an exchange account, funded it and waited out any security holds already.)
- Trust Wallet will use an outside exchange to buy the SOL, such as MoonPay. You’ll create an account in this step, and yes, you have to enter your government-issued ID information.
- Choose SOL. Enter the amount (it’s a good idea to get a little more than the purchase price.)
- Complete the checkout:
- ID verification is required.
- Use a debit card, Apple Pay, etc.
- Wait a few minutes for funds to show in Trust Wallet.
🔄 Step 4: Swap SOL to a stablecoin
You don’t absolutely NEED to swap SOL into a stablecoin, but since SOL’s value is volatile it’s highly recommended to hold stablecoin to use for purchases instead.
- From the main screen, tap the Swap button.
- Click the SOL icon to see only SOL based assets. (The SOL icon is a stylized green / purple S.)
Swap:- From: SOL
- To: USDT or USDC
- NOTE: See which currency and network your vendor uses to avoid additional swaps. Swap to that stablecoin currency and network.
- Enter amount and confirm the swap is for the right currency (e.g. USDT) AND network (e.g. Solana/SOL, Ethereum/ETH, etc.).
- Click or Slide to Swap. Wait for confirmation. This is usually near-instant.
💸 Step 5: Send Crypto to the Vendor
- Tap the asset you’re sending (USDT/SOL, USDC/SOL, USDC/ETH, etc.)
- Tap Send.
- Paste the vendor’s wallet address
- Double-check the Destination network (e.g., Solana ≠ Tron).
- Confirm it matches what the vendor says to use.
- Enter the exact amount in the exact currency the vendor confirmed.
- NOTE: 300 SOL ≠ $300 USD. Ensure you’re using the correct currency unit
- Tap Next.
⚠️ Important: You can’t ‘undo’ a crypto transaction. Triple-check:
- ✅ Wallet address (unique ID specific to a network) is the actual vendor’s wallet
- ✅ Network (SOL vs TRX vs ETH)
- ✅ Coin currency type (USDT vs USDC vs PYUSD vs SOL vs ETH)
- ✅ The fees will be shown. Click Confirm. Verify passcode.
🧾 Step 6: Confirm with Vendor
- Send proof of payment if required (e.g., transaction ID link, screenshot).
- Most vendors will verify order once confirmed on-chain within 24 hours.
Tips & Final Warnings
- Educate yourself beyond this guide — ask experienced community members in the Crypto channel if you have questions.
- Keep screenshots of your transaction and/or a link to the blockchain confirmation in case the vendor asks.
- Never send crypto to unverified or unsolicited DM accounts.
- Treat your recovery phrase like your bank account password — if you lose it, you lose your funds.
