What is KPV?

KPV (Lys-Pro-Val) corresponds to residues 11-13 of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone, the smallest fragment reported to retain meaningful biological activity from the parent peptide. Because it lacks the sequence responsible for melanocortin receptor-driven pigmentation, researchers use it to isolate alpha-MSH’s anti-inflammatory effects from its pigment-related actions.

How it is understood to work

KPV is studied for its ability to enter cells via the PepT1 peptide transporter, which is highly expressed in intestinal and skin tissue, and to inhibit NF-kB signaling once inside, reducing production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Some in vitro work also describes direct antimicrobial activity against certain bacterial strains.

Research status

The tripeptide has been examined mainly in cell culture and rodent models of colitis, inflammatory bowel conditions, dermatitis and wound healing; it has not been evaluated in registered human clinical trials, and its transporter-dependent uptake means results can vary meaningfully between tissue types used in different study models.
