What is LL-37?
LL-37 is cleaved from the precursor protein hCAP18 and is expressed by neutrophils, epithelial cells and other immune-related cell types throughout the body. Its name reflects the peptide’s first two residues, leucine-leucine, and its 37-amino-acid length, and it folds into an amphipathic alpha-helix that underlies much of its activity.
How it is understood to work
LL-37 physically disrupts bacterial membranes and can neutralize bacterial endotoxin and break down established biofilms, functioning as part of the innate immune system’s first line of defense. Beyond direct antimicrobial action, it modulates immune-cell recruitment and cytokine release and has been linked to promoting epithelial repair and new blood vessel formation in study models.
Research status
LL-37 is studied extensively in antimicrobial-resistance research, biofilm-associated infection models, wound-healing biology and innate-immunity signaling, spanning bacterial, cell-culture and animal-model systems. It is a naturally occurring host-defense peptide rather than a drug candidate on its own, and research continues into engineered variants with improved selectivity.

Handling & storage
Supplied as a lyophilized powder; keep unopened vials frozen and protected from light, and once reconstituted with bacteriostatic water, store refrigerated and use within the timeframe appropriate to your study.

No, LL-37 specifically refers to the human cathelicidin peptide; other species produce related but structurally distinct cathelicidin peptides, so cross-species comparisons in the literature should be read with that distinction in mind.
