What is Glutathione?

Glutathione is built from glutamate, cysteine and glycine and occurs naturally in most cells at relatively high concentration, making it the most abundant non-protein thiol in the body. Because it is endogenous rather than a novel synthetic sequence, research interest centers on modulating its levels and activity rather than characterizing a new compound.

How it is understood to work

Its reactive cysteine thiol group allows glutathione to directly neutralize reactive oxygen species and to serve as the essential cofactor for glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase, enzymes central to cellular detoxification. It also helps regenerate oxidized vitamins C and E back to their active, reduced forms.
