What is Adipotide?

Adipotide, also referred to as FTPP, pairs a short targeting sequence that recognizes prohibitin on adipose endothelium with a pro-apoptotic peptide domain. The construct was designed as a research tool for probing how the vascular supply of fat tissue can be selectively interrupted, rather than as a conventional receptor ligand.

How it is understood to work

The targeting portion is reported to home to prohibitin expressed on the luminal surface of blood vessels within white adipose tissue. Once bound, the attached pro-apoptotic sequence is thought to trigger programmed cell death in those endothelial cells, reducing local blood flow and, in animal models, adipocyte mass. Its action is considered vasculature-directed rather than a direct effect on adipocytes themselves.

Research status

Adipotide has been examined primarily in rodent and non-human primate obesity models, where reductions in fat mass and body weight were reported alongside changes in insulin sensitivity. It remains an early-stage investigational tool; findings have not been established in controlled human trials, and questions about selectivity, reversibility, and long-term vascular effects are still active areas of study.
