What is 5-Amino-1MQ?

5-Amino-1MQ is a synthetic quinolinium compound, not a peptide, designed to cross cell membranes and inhibit NNMT, an enzyme that is unusually active in fat tissue. Interest in the molecule grew out of work connecting NNMT activity to metabolic flexibility, prompting researchers to look for selective, cell-permeable inhibitors.

How it is understood to work

By blocking NNMT, the compound is thought to limit the enzyme’s methylation of nicotinamide, which in preclinical models raises intracellular NAD+ and S-adenosylmethionine availability.
