What is MOTS-c?
MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded within the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene—one of a small class of mitochondrial-derived peptides that act as signalling molecules between mitochondria and the rest of the cell.
Mechanism of Action
MOTS-c activates the AMPK pathway and influences folate–methionine metabolism, improving glucose utilisation and insulin sensitivity in study models. Under metabolic stress it can translocate to the nucleus to regulate adaptive gene expression.
Research Applications
MOTS-c is studied in research on insulin resistance, obesity, exercise capacity, age-related metabolic decline and mitochondrial function.
