What is Glutathione?
Glutathione is built from glutamate, cysteine and glycine and occurs naturally in most cells at relatively high concentration, making it the most abundant non-protein thiol in the body. Because it is endogenous rather than a novel synthetic sequence, research interest centers on modulating its levels and activity rather than characterizing a new compound.
How it is understood to work
Its reactive cysteine thiol group allows glutathione to directly neutralize reactive oxygen species and to serve as the essential cofactor for glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase, enzymes central to cellular detoxification. It also helps regenerate oxidized vitamins C and E back to their active, reduced forms.
Research status
Glutathione is widely studied in oxidative stress, hepatic function, skin pigmentation, and immune and aging research, spanning cell-culture, animal, and some human clinical studies, particularly around liver protection and skin research. Bioavailability of exogenously supplied glutathione is an active area of methodological debate in this literature.

Handling & storage
Supplied as a lyophilized powder; keep unopened vials frozen and protected from light, and once reconstituted, store refrigerated and use promptly, as the free thiol group is susceptible to oxidation over time.

Why does glutathione purity matter for research use?
The thiol group that gives glutathione its antioxidant activity is also what makes it prone to oxidizing into the inactive disulfide form (GSSG), so a COA confirming HPLC purity and correct reduced-form identity is particularly relevant for this compound.
Is this the reduced or oxidized form of glutathione?
It is supplied as the reduced form (GSH), the biologically active thiol-containing species most commonly used in redox and detoxification research, as opposed to the disulfide-linked oxidized form (GSSG).
